Annabel Johnson has a BA in Art History, a PGCE in Primary Education and an MA in Museum and Gallery Education. She has taught across the curriculum in state and independent schools and in Museums and Galleries, working with teachers and students from Key Stage 1-4 at the National Maritime Museum, The Whitechapel Gallery, Tate, and The Courtauld Gallery.
She was Curator for Schools at Whitechapel Gallery for 12 years, managing artist residency programmes for primary and secondary schools within the gallery setting. This work involved developing collaborative art works between students, teachers, and artists, culminating in the exhibition of work as part of the gallery’s exhibition programme of contemporary art.
She devised research on artists working in schools as part of the Enquire Programme, managed by Engage (The National Association for Gallery Education) and programmed an international conference exploring artists working with young people. She developed Co-mentoring programmes for Artists and Secondary School Teachers, has written widely on her subject and is published in 2 journals for national Arts Education bodies. She more recently founded a local organisation in SW London programming Art courses and clubs for children in schools and community venues. www.childrensartschool.org
From 2018-2021 she was Head of Art and Design Technology at Donhead Preparatory School
She has an active painting and ceramics practice and is passionate about Art galleries and museums. She reads widely, walks wherever possible with her dog, especially by the coast and ran London Marathon in April 2019.
She is the mother of two teenage boys.
She is currently developing her ceramics practice and has a garden studio where she runs workshops and classes for a wide range of audiences.
Alongside all this she works for The Courtauld Gallery since 2016 delivering tours and practical art workshops for a wide range of audiences.
