My name is Joanna Petaloudas. I am 54 years old, and I've been teaching private piano lessons since I was 13 years old. That's over four decades of piano teaching experience! I earned my B.A. (hons) in Music Education, and I have 12 years' experience as a classroom music teacher for students age 5 through 18 in both the private and public school setting in both the USA and in England. I am the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) honorary local representative for music theory in Bristol. Since moving to England, I have had 79 different students take a total of 164 exams, ranging from the Initial Exam through Grade 8. My students have earned a total of 94 Distinctions, 46 Merits, and 24 Pass. NONE of my students have ever failed an exam! Most of my students who study properly for ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory earn a Distinction. Many of my students enjoy participating in our annual local music festival, where they enter classes and perform for an audience. A registered examiner scores their performances and the highest scores are rewarded with medals and trophies.
My students are not required to participate in any public performance, nor are they forced to study for official exams. I teach for the joy of sharing my knowledge and I want my students to enjoy the process of learning. We have fun in our lessons! I am very much a support of technology in music education, and I offer loads of support and after care between lessons. Some of my support includes YouTube videos that I have either recorded myself or links of carefully screened videos created by other music educators or concert pianists. I also create audio file recordings that I email to parents so that the child can practice along with my direct verbal instruction, much like we would do in our online lessons. There are plenty of resource materials that I include with every set of follow-up lesson notes that the student will always feel guided and directed towards the next step in their learning with proper technique and correct information.
