Hi, I’m Hannah, founder of Unplugged Tots and I'm a big believer in the magic of play (for kids and us adults too!)
Unplugged Tots started in 2018 because of my own children. We attended a tech festival as a family and my daughters were transfixed by ScratchJr (a block coding application, designed to support young children with early computer coding skills). However, they struggled with it, they couldn't understand what to do because at this stage (being 2 and 4) they couldn't read or write. So I took it upon myself to learn Scratch to see whether I could help bridge the gap for them. And Unplugged Tots was born.
I use screen-free, play based activities that introduce skills around problem solving, critical thinking, logical reasoning, essentially computational thinking or pre-computer coding skills.
I'm very aware of the guilt us parents feel about screen use but for me, it's all about balance and being intentional with the screen use we do allow. Plus, every family dynamic is different. We all want the best for our kids, but it’s not always easy to know how to support their learning and creativity without relying on tech and that’s where Unplugged Tots comes in – helping kids play, learn, and think in a way that feels natural and fun.
I create simple, hands-on activities that introduce kids to problem-solving and creative thinking – no screens required. I’ve run after-school clubs, holiday sessions, and workshops for families and educators, and I’m passionate about making play more intentional and meaningful to give parents especially some support.
I’m a regular speaker in the STEAM education world and have had various academic articles published – but honestly, my proudest moments are seeing kids light up when they figure something out on their own.
Oh, and I’ve got a book coming out this year – which is both exciting and terrifying!
At the end of the day, I believe play is powerful – and sometimes, unplugging is exactly what we need to reconnect.
